Saint James School honored its Head of School, Melba Richardson, Friday, October 17, 2014 during a halftime presentation. Mrs. Richardson announced her retirement in early summer 2014, effective June 30, 2015, which will complete 32 years of service to the school.
Visitors to the school’s campus often see Mrs. Richardson away from her office, making time to personally greet students in the mornings, walking the quad at lunch, and meeting with families as they tour the school. And on Friday nights, she and her husband, Dr. William Richardson (Bill), are seated in the stands, in front of the press box, cheering on the Trojans, just as they have done for over 30 seasons. Mrs. Richardson’s commitment to the students, the STJ families, and the school’s programs is undeniable. And her enthusiasm for STJ Friday night football is unmistakable.
To mark the last home game of the year, during regular season play, the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach worked behind the scenes with Dr. Richardson and took Mrs. Richardson completely by surprise. She thought she was taking a quick photograph on the field and was in fact presented with a bouquet of roses, remarks by the voice of STJ Athletics J.R. Brown, and a standing ovation by the school community.
While there is still a great deal of school ahead of Mrs. Richardson before the end of June, the school leaders knew this particular game would be very emotional for her. And what a way to mark the evening! Not only did she receive such a moving tribute, but her beloved Trojans won the game to clinch the Class 4A Region 2 championship. What a night to remember.
